Activities

A day at the beach

The recreation area Heerderstrand is less than 10 minutes from Hoeve WoudStee. Heerderstrand is a large lake with a wide strip of sand that slopes gently into the water. The idyllic location in the middle of a forest area and the clean water of the lake make this a popular place to visit. You can swim in the water or move over the water with a canoe or SUP board.

Access to Heerderstrand is free. If you come by car, you pay a parking fee. Our advice: take the bike! The bike ride takes about the same time, the parking is free and the cycle path runs through a beautiful area.

For a special relaxation experience you can go to Floatingcentrum Heerde. By floating weightlessly in salt water, the stress hormone cortisol decreases while the endorphins and melatonin increase. This allows you to experience a feeling of well-being and recharge completely. After you also sleep on one of our box-spring beds for another night, you will wake up reborn in the morning.

Commemorate on the heath

During the Second World War, the Veluwe played an important role in hiding Jews, resistance fighters and allies. In various places there are war memorials that commemorate the period 1940 -’45. In Epe, for example, there is a monument dedicated to the Van Essen family who managed to keep 54 people in hiding out of the hands of the Germans.

Every year, commemorations are held at various places, such as the National Veterans Cemetery in Loenen. In September you can witness the impressive Airborne on the Ginkelse Hei, where more than 1000 paratroopers are dropped, just like during Operation Market Garden in 1944.

Take a walk

Whether it is a detour or a trip of 20 miles; the easiest way to explore the Veluwe is on foot. From the WoudStee farm you are within a few steps in the middle of the Renderklippen nature reserve, where many walking routes run. The Bekenpad van Epe takes you along flowing water through forests with every now and then a historical attraction such as the Kopermolen in Zuuk. On the De Dellen estate you have the chance to spot a red deer while walking on one of the 4 short routes through this area. For children there are three experience trails in the area where you also have a chance to see game.

The children’s experience package with binoculars, assignment booklet and magnifying glass are available at the starting points and Tourist office in Epe. Here are also hiking maps available that we often have in stock.

The countryside

Admire the Renderklippen

The Renderklippen is a special nature reserve that lies between the municipalities of Heerde and Epe. Hilly and overgrown with heather and pine trees, you can walk or cycle past grazing sheep herds. The name Renderklippen comes from rendering; walking up and down hills. Because of the height differences you have a great view over the area with sand drifts, small pools and in late summer the beautiful purple heather. And if you search carefully you might come across a grass snake or adder!

100% wild

Just like Africa, the Veluwe has a group of animals that are difficult to spot. These are called the ‘Big Five’. This is of course not about lions and elephants, but about the red deer, wild boar, roe deer, fox and Scottish highlander (also the badger, the mouflon and nowadays even the wolf are sometimes mentioned in this list).

Epe’s motto is ‘100% game guarantee’, so you will definitely see one of these five animals. The best chance to spot these animals is at sunrise or sunset. You can try to find them yourself while walking or book a real wildlife excursion. Be as quiet as possible because these animals are very shy and will run as soon as they hear or smell you.

Veluwe for horses

The WoudStee farm is adjacent to the bridle path near junction 32 of the Horse Route Network. At the Tourist Office of Epe and with us you can get a map to the node network and where facilities for parking, saddle, tighten and find rest. The network consists of 90% unpaved dirt roads that lead through forests and along heaths. In some parts you will find loose sand and only short parts of the route are bridged by asphalted paths / roads.

The ‘Eper Vierdaagse‘ is organized annually in the second week of June. Epe is then entirely devoted to recreational equestrian sports. More information about this event can be found here.

Known as a Hanseatic city and perhaps even more so for all the cozy alleys, beautiful buildings and cozy shops, Elburg is more than worth a visit. This old fishing town exudes history that you can admire during a city walk.

The Gruithuis, Touwslagerij Deetman and herb garden ‘De Groene Kruidhof’ are some of the special sights in Elburg. Taste freshly smoked eel at Van Triest (since 1892) and sail on a botter boat to the Veluwemeer.

The big city

Less than 15 miles from Epe lies Apeldoorn, a city with almost 160,000 inhabitants and countless opportunities for a day of entertainment.

The Apenheul, Radio Kootwijk, Paleis het Loo and Julianatoren amusement park are well-known tourist attractions, but the lesser-known spots are also worth a visit. Take the Prinsengang, for example, the narrowest alley in Apeldoorn that Prince Hendrik used to go to his favorite pub.

Get on the Veluwe Steam Train for a ride through the IJssel Valley or buy freshly grown fruit in the Oude Olifantenschuur near the Loo. Of course you can also enjoy shopping in the center and get lost in one of the attractive shops of the 4 streets and ‘t plein.
